Trip Overview

Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain is a hiking and camping adventure in the location of Cusco. The cold temperature may even go below 0 degree Celsius at night, but that’s the thrill and a challenge. To get to the amazing colors of the mountains you must overcome these challenges and become one of the first ones to explore this untouched beauty. This trip starts at Pukutuni School and ends at Cusco. The trek is for 3 days and 2 nights. All that hidden beauty is worth the visit, and only a few are lucky enough to step into the Rainbow Mountain. Discover your calling!

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco-Pukutuni School-Pucaccocha

Early at 4 am you will be picked up for a 3 hours’ drive which will take you to the trailhead of Pukutuni School. Get some breakfast and meet the crew - porters, chefs, and horsemen. A three-hour hike will take you to your lunch spot at Upis village under Ausanagte Mountain. An uphill climb of about 1.5 hours will be commenced after lunch to Vicuna pass (4,850m) and then 3 hours climb to the Pucaccoha campsite. On this day, you will get stunning views of waterfalls, valleys, and glacier peaks.

Day 2: Pucaccocha-Condor Pass-Alpaca Pass-Soroni Lake

After breakfast, take a 2-hour climb to Condor Pass (4900m). Get the magical views of lagoons and Ausangate Mountain, and also some alpacas and llamas. Gradually, hike downhill for about 2 hours towards your lunch spot. Climb up to Alpaca Pass (4950m) to see a small glimpse of Rainbow Mountain. After an hour of downhill hiking, you will reach the campsite and it is one of the most beautiful spots to enjoy the landscape views.

Day 3: Soroni Lake-Rainbow Mountain-Kayrawiri

Start your morning with breakfast and hot drinks, and then take 2 hours uphill trek to the famous mountain. On your way, you will see the wildlife of vicunas. You can stroll around the place after reaching your destination, take spectacular photographs and just enjoy the vibrancy of nature. The guide will shower you with information about colors and minerals. While leaving, you will take 1 hour to the trail endpoint, say goodbye to your trekking team, and continue further with your guide. Drive for 3 hours to Cusco.

  • The Cusco airport is only for domestic flights, so the travelers must disembark and go through customs in Lima. You must grab your luggage at Lima even if your flight to Cusco is by the same airline carrier on the same day.
