Trip Overview

Set foot in Nepal’s stunning Khumbu region to feast your senses on the fabulous presence of the Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Konge Ri, and Kusum Kangru mountains on this 15-day long exploration. Fly a swashbuckling flight into Lukla - the precarious airstrip on the edge of the cliffs, from where this trek shall flag off. Soak in the cool mountain air and acclimatize with ease at Namche Bazaar- a bustling settlement town and the capital of the Sherpa people in the lap of Khumbu’s splendid hills. Hike up into the canyons of the Dudh Kosi River; view for the first time the great behemoths like the Thamserku and Kusum Kangru peaks. Trailing by the Buddhist gompa at Khumjung which stands amidst a grove of cedars, we reach the Everest View Hotel-- a landmark stop on this long trek. The trek challenge amplifies on reaching the moraine and thick gravelly terminal of the Khumbu Glacier, climaxing finally at Kala Patthar at 18193 ft, opening up to an incredible panorama of the Himalayas. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kathmandu (1300m/4265ft)

Arrange to reach Kathmandu International Airport at the appointed time to get picked up and check in at the lodge. A welcome feast awaits, and you may take your personal time today to explore the vibrant city at your leisure.

Day 2: Fly to Lukla (2800m/9187ft); trek to PHAKDING (2610m/8563ft) 2-3 hours trek; 200m descent, 50m ascent

Fly to Lukla from Kathmandu, bathing in the sweet air and marveling at the magnificent mountain panorama. Lukla airport at 9187 ft is known as one of the most precarious air strips in the world, the thrill quotient runs high! We trek next to Phakding, descending through farmlands and a handful of Sherpa villages, shrines, and gompas. The peaks Kumbila and Kusum Kangru massifs come to meet the gaze from here.

Day 3: Trek to NAMCHE (3420m/11221ft) 5-6 hours/1000m ascent, 100m descent

Today, we will be heading towards Namche Bazaar, crossing hamlets cradling in the greenery-- Zamphute and Tok Tok, while the Thamserku peak glitters in the distance. We will stop at the Utche Choling Gompa seated atop a bluff on the Dudh Kosi River, and from there take a forked path into the UNESCO declared a world natural heritage site-- the Sagarmatha National Park.

We come unto the river soon after, fording the waters on high bridges looking simply spectacular where the river Dudh Kosi is met by its tributary-- the Bhote Kosi. The first look of the Everest comes today on reaching Namche Bazar, peering gloriously over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge!

Day 4: Acclimatize at NAMCHE; Trek KHUMJUNG (3780m/12402ft); back to NAMCHE

Enjoy a relaxed acclimatization day at Namche Bazar. To help acclimatize naturally, take short walks in the village locales, taking in the terraced slopes, the distinctly architectured houses, the distant snowline and much more. Saturdays in the village calls for a big bazaar where traders from nearby locales comes with handicrafts and different wares. The market area is flocked by men and women wearing colorful traditional attire. The team can also go on foot to visit the Khumjung Gompa, and further on to Hillary School and the Everest View Hotel for lunch.

Day 5: Trek TENGBOCHE (3870m/12697ft) 4 hours; 350m descent, 750m ascent

 An easy trek ensues from Namche the next morning, on a level trail cutting around the ridge from Chhorkung to the edge of a bluff overlooking the peak panorama from Thamserku to Ama Dabalam, Lhotse and Everest. Following on the trail, we enter Tengboche where the path gently descends toward the river. Crossing a river bridge, we will climb through a forested trail blushing with summer rhododendrons. Wildlife enthusiasts need to look out here to spot musk deer and Himalayan Tahr. The Tengboche monastery is the central attraction of this spot.

Day 6: Trek DINGBOCHE (4360m/14305ft) 3-5 hours; 70m descent, 580m ascent

We will continue from Tengboche the day next on a forested trail of different conifers and rhododendrons, and looking out for the vibrant birdlife and animals in this forest-- monal pheasants and musk deer. Today we also halt briefly at the Debuche Gompa-- a small Buddhist nunnery on the hillside treasuring some ancient thangkas and wood panel painted murals. Crossing a hanging bridge at Imja Khola we come on to another Buddhist stupa where a holy footprint of the saint Lama Dorje is kept in preservation. Travelling on we come into a vast yak pasture and herdsmen’s settlements at Orsho and Tsuro Wog. To the right of the trial the confluence of Imja Khola and Khumbu Khola streams can be seen. The sprawling expanse of Dingboche is a campsite open to cold and the wind, with temperatures dipping to subzero even in the summer.

Day 7: Trek NANGKARTSANG SUMMIT (5090m/16700ft); back to DINGBOCHE

To the north of Dingboche, the Nangkartsang Gompa on the high ridge is an interesting place to venture for a day hike in the vicinity. From the lofty heights, a brilliant panorama of the world’s highest peaks-- the Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu meets the eye. Journeying on from here, we continue to the Nangkartshang summit for a view up closer, and descend downhill to Dingboche for the night.

Day 8: Trek DUGHLA (4620m/15158ft) 2 hours; 400m ascent

The trail takes us into the very lap of the Himalayas with spellbinding views of the snowline on all sides. Ahead of Dingboche, we pass through the remote village of Dusa and stop for a revelation-like view of the twin peaks Taboche and Cholatse, ama Dabalam, and the summit of Kantega. We will camp at Dughla tonight.

Day 9: Trek LOBUCHE (4930m/16175ft) 2 hours; 300m ascent

The trek gets one notch more challenging today, going down the gravelly, moraine decked trail on the Khumbu Glacier. At Chupki Lhara, you will see stones tagged with numerous prayer flags in the remembrance of the mountaineers who perished in pursue of climbing Everest.

Day 10: Trek GORAK SHEP (5160m/16930ft) and EBC (5340m/17521ft) and back to GORAK SHEP

The trek terrain will switch today from velveteen grassy beds to rough hewn patches scattered with boulders and snowbound mountain beckoning from up ahead. We will come across the lateral moraine wall of the Changri glacier, even closer to the snow-covered behemoths. You can actually see the Changri glacier merging with the Khumbu. Trekking on a steep incline, we reach Gorak Shep from where the first glimpse of Kala Patthar meets the eye.

From here, we journey on to EBC- the base camp of Mount Everest. Gorak Shep Lake is crossed on the way; the Changtse peak can be seen faraway in Tibet and the Lho La depression straight ahead. Several glacial ice melt streams, frozen or semi frozen pools and icy walls are crossed on the way. We reach EBC before nightfall to check out from where mountaineers take their strep ahead. We descend to Gorak Shep to spend the night.

Day 11: Trek KALA PATTHAR (5545m/18193ft); return trek PHERICHE (4240m/13911ft)

We ascend to Kala Patthar at 18193 ft today, crossing over vast sand plains of dried up lakes and steep switchbacks. Unsung peaks-- Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse rise majestically from beyond, a grand view of the entire Khumbu glacier is found colluded, and the grand Nuptse massif is discovered in all awe and wonder. The way down is longer from Kala Patthar. After viewing the Everest from the legendary summit viewpoint of Kala Patthar, we will attend to go as far down as Pheriche, passing again through Gorak Shep, Lobuche, and Dughla.

Day 12: Trek back NAMCHE BAZAR

The trail down Pheriche descends to Tsuro Wog after crossing the bridge across Khumbu Khola to the backdrop of astonishing mountain views. Passing again through Tengboche, we descend to Phunki Tenga and finally down to Namche Bazar.

Day 13: Trek back LUKLA

 We will trek along the banks of the Dudh Kosi River today and reach Lukla by the same way we had come.

Day 14: Fly back KATHMANDU

Bidding adieu to the magnificent Khumbu region, we shall fly back to Kathmandu today and send a fairly leisurely day in the historic Nepal capital city.

Day 15: Fly back HOME or extend your HOLIDAYS

Arrange your flight back home today.

Good to Know

The seasons when this trek can be most pleasant are during the spring - from March to May, in autumn - from mid-September to mid-December, and if you are up to withstanding the harsh winters for the sake of the extreme experience, do come during December-February.
