Trip Overview

Leaped by the Dhaulagiri and the Tibetan Plateau, Upper Dolpo is a remote yet iconic trek in the Himalayan region. With a unique blend of Nepalese and Tibetan culture, numerous monasteries, and small settlements, one can gain a clear insight into the lifestyle on this side of the Himalayas. This trek generously rewards all the tourists with astonishing views of Mt. Dhaulagiri, Kagmara Peak, and the entire Dolpo valley. Kang La, Saldang La, and Jeng La are the three major high passes that we will summit in this trek. Phoksundo Lake is another appeal of this trek and the campsite at the shore of this lake will bring immense tranquility and peace. Walk past beautiful, grazing pastures, bridges made of wooden logs, and epic mountain views on the way. Find your way through steep gorges, meadows, dense pine and cedar forests, valleys, and streams and be a part of this exclusive Himalayan Voyage.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu and Check-in at hotel
    Reach Kathmandu International Airport and our representative will meet you there and transfer you to the Hotel. The rest of the day is free and you can explore the vibrant city. The tour manager will meet you at the Hotel and brief all the participants about the trip, followed by a welcome dinner.
  • Day 2: Sight-seeing and Trek Preparation at Kathmandu
    We will begin a guided tour of the city after breakfast. Visit the historical and spiritual attractions including Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, Monkey Temple, and Buddhist Shrine. In the evening you will meet the trek leaders, who will brief everyone about the upcoming trek.
  • Day 3: Fly to Nepalgunj
    We take a one hour long flight to Nepalgunj and explore this small town, located in western Nepal. Visit the local market, mini-zoo, and close by villages.
  • Day 4 : Fly to Jhuphal and Trek to Dunai
    Take a 40 minute flight to Juphal from where you would commence trekking. Pass through the local villages, maize fields and cross a stream. Reach the settlement of Kala Gaura and trek on the south bank of the stream. Cross Roop Ghar, broad flat meadow with pine, and small fields to reach Dunai village. The village has a school, check post and government offices. Stay at a tented camp in Dunai.
  • Day 5: Trek to Ankhe
    Begin the trek by crossing a suspension bridge and moving west past a hospital. Ascend up to Thulo Bheri valley and enter the Phoksundo river valley. View the Kagamara peak as you pass through walnut groves, Dhera, and Rahagaun village. Trek past the dense jungle and reach Ankhe, where you will spend the night.
  • Day 6: Trek to Sulighat
    Today we will trek on a steep trail that goes up and down at several points through a wooded riverbank. You will find several streams along the route and the trail will eventually lead to the grassy slope above the river. Trek downwards through lush forest and reach a cliff. There will be a sudden drop on a stone staircase to the river bank. Trek further in the direction to reach Sulighat.
  • Day 7: Trek to Phoksundo Lake
    Proceed along the trail to the junction of the Phoksundo and Pungmo rivers. Cross the bridge and begin trekking along the western bank of Pungmo Khola. Hike through a cedar forest to reach Palam village and move along the ridge to view the Phoksundo Lake and a waterfall. The trail will make its way through birch forests to Upper Phoksundo Khola and then to Ringo village. This village has mud-plastered chortens and mani walls. Trek a little further to reach the Phoksundo Lake and stay the night here.
  • Day 8: Acclimatization and Phoksundo Lake
    Rest for the day or trek to Ringmo Village and Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in the area. Interact with the locals and explore their lifestyle. Overnight stay at the Phoksundo Lake.
  • Day 9: Trek to Phoksundo Khola
    Begin the trek and move towards the rocky ledge along the western bank of the lake. The unsteady trail constructed using woods will take you to the westernmost edge of the lake. Trek past a lush meadow, which opens into a flood plain. Move along the trail, crossing the river to reach Phoksundo Khola.
  • Day 10: Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang
    Today we will trek along a trail that will take us through a glacial valley. At the junction of Phoksundo Khola and a mountain stream, there is a bridge that will lead you to a sheep meadow. The trail drives up into a steep ravine, followed by a tough climb to a valley from where you can gaze at the Kang-La pass. Set up the camp near ‘Snowfield’s camp’ and spend the night here.
  • Day 11: Trek to Shey Gompa via Kang-La Pass
    Get up early in the morning and ascend on a trail with slate. Climbing up to the pass is quite tough but once you reach the top, you will be intrigued by gorgeous valley views. Descend and trek on a meandering trail beside the river. You will cross the river several times and eventually pass a meadow. Cross a log bridge and reach the Shey Gompa compound.
  • Day 12: Acclimatization at Shey Gompa
    Acclimatize at Shey Gompa and hike around the village. Explore the pre-Buddhist culture and the Tibetan lifestyle.
  • Day 13: Trek to Namduna Gaun via Saldang La
    Begin trek amidst juniper trees and proceed towards a grey stone canyon. Follow the zig-zag trail over rocks and reach the top of Saldan La pass. Descend towards the north to reach Namduna Gaun. Visit the Namgung monastery, which is built with a breathtaking backdrop of a cliff. Overnight stay at Namduna Gaun.
  • Day 14: Trek to Saldang
    Vacate the village and trek upwards on a slope through dusty and old mountains. Eventually, you’ll be able to see Saldang village on a plateau, sitting right above the Namga Khola stream. Trek further to reach the largest village of inner Doplo- Saldang. Spend the night at this village.
  • Day 15: Trek to Yangze Gompa
    Trek along the Nagaon Khola River on a gradual trail with little ups and downs. Cross Marang and Ki villages, followed by a tributary of the Panzan River. Move towards the east and reach the Yangze Gompa. There is an old Bon-Po monastery that you can visit. Overnight stay in Yangze Gompa.
  • Day 16: Trek to Sibu
    We will retrace our path back to Saldang, from where we will trek along a river, that passes through stupas, terraced fields, heaps on mani stones, and a Chaiba Monastery. Trek through the Namdo Village and continue down for 2 hours to reach a small camp near Sibu.
  • Day 17: Trek to Jeng-la Phedi
    Move along the Nam Khong Khola and pass by the caravans. Head eastwards towards a junction of two streams and follow a steep trail that will take you to a grazing field below Jeng La pass. Set up a camp in the area and spend the night.
  • Day 18: Trek to Tokyu Gaon via Jeng La pass
    Get up early and start the 2-hour trek to the top of Jeng la pass. Capture remarkable views of the Dhaulagiri range from the top. Follow the descending trail to Tarap valley and move towards the Tarap Chu River. Set up a camp around the Tokyu monastery and stay the night.
  • Day 19: Trek to Dho Tarap
    Trek along the downhill trail through a plain valley with lush green patches on the side of river. You will have to trek through a marshy area and after a short trek you will reach Dho Tarap.
  • Day 20: Rest Day at Dho Tarap
    Explore the village or rest for the day. Meet with the locals of the area and visit Buddhist Gompa in the nearby location. Spend the night at Dho tarap.
  • Day 21: Trek to Tarap Khola
    Trek downwards to a wide valley that narrows down into a gorge. Move along juniper, wild bushes, and herds of blue sheep. You will reach the junction of Tarap Chu and Lang Khola by afternoon. Here you will set up a tent and stay for the night.
  • Day 22: Trek to Khanigaon
    Commence today’s trek by going down the gorge of the Tarap River. Pass through yak pastures, deep gorge, and bridges made of wooden logs. Cross the icy torrent on foot and reach the campsite along Tarap Khola at Khanigaon.
  • Day 23: Trek to Tarakot
    Follow the trail that leads to Lalberi village, followed by a lush forest. Descend into a gorge and continue along the river. You will eventually reach Tarakot, where you can visit Sandul Gompa. Camp along the banks of the Tarap Chu River and spend the night in Tarakot.
  • Dy 24: Trek to Dunai
    Move towards the trail behind the Bheri River and cross a bridge near Lawan village. Trek along the river until Byas Gadi, from where the trek will turn easy. Reach Lochakhola Gaon and cross the river to ascend into Dunai.
  • Day 25: Trek to Jhuphal
    Trek by the Bheri River and pass through Dhupichaur and Rupgad village. Move further towards Kalagaonda and Motipur village to reach an airstrip. Spend the night in Jhupal.
  • Day 26: Fly to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu
    We will board the earliest flight to Nepalgunj followed by another flight to Kathmandu. All the guests will be transferred to the hotel for rest and a good night’s sleep.
  • Day 27: Rest Day in Kathmandu
    You can either rest for the day or explore the city of Kathmandu on your own. Visit the market for souvenir shopping and enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel.
  • Day 28: Departure
    Our staff will drop all the guests at the airport for departures.
