Trip Overview

Get ready for one of the best treks in Africa! Embark on this amazing 4-day journey to climb Africa’s second highest mountain - Mount Kenya. Hike via the scenic Sirimon Route and enjoy a stunning sunrise at Point Lenana, the “trekkers’ summit”.

Leave Nairobi in the morning on a transfer to the trek starting point, and trek up to Old Moses Camp (3,340m) on Day 1. Next, you will trek to Shipton Camp (4,236m) on Day 2. On Day 3 trek back to Moses Camp via Point Lenana (4,985m). End your trek with your final hike to Sirimon Park Gate (2,600m) and then hop on board your return transfer to Nairobi where your journey comes to an end.

Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi to Sirimon Park Gate (2,600m) Transfer & Trek to Old Moses Camp (3,340m) (L/D)

You will get picked up from your accommodation in Nairobi around 8:00 am and drive through the Kikuyu countryside to the slopes of Mt Kenya, passing by the Equator. After lunch in Nanyuki Town, drive until Sirimon Park Gate [2,600m]. After park entrance formalities, start hiking to Old Moses Camp [3,300m]. You will climb through bamboo, rosewood and heather forests, viewing beautiful wildlife such as buffaloes, elephants, bushbucks and many bird species. Overnight in Old Moses Camp.

*Note: An extra day for acclimatization before the trek is strongly recommended and can be arranged for an additional cost

Inclusions: Transfer to Sirimon Park Gate (225Kms / 4hrs), Trek to Moses Hut (10Kms/ 3-4hrs), 1N Camping, Meals: 1L/1D.

Day 2: Old Moses Camp - Shipton Camp (4,236m) (B,L,D)

After an early breakfast, hike along the Mackinders Valley until Shipton Camp [4,236m], at the base of Mt Kenya’s high peaks. During today’s exciting trek, you will test your individual endurance while you hike across hills and valleys through the sprawling moorlands. During the day, you can enjoy wonderful views of the main peaks up above, as well as several unique plants and animals such as the giant groundsels, lobelias and the mountain rock hyrax. Overnight in Shipton’s hut.

Inclusions: Trek to Shipton Camp (14Kms / 7-8hrs), 1N Camping, Meals: 1B/1L/1D.

Day 3: Trek to Old Moses Camp (3,340m) via Point Lenana (4,985m) (B,L,D)

Summit day! Start your journey nice and early at 3am. Hike up steep scree slopes and across rugged rocks up to Point Lenana [4,985m], the hiker’s summit. There, enjoy an outstanding sunrise, admiring Mt Kilimanjaro 340 kms to the south when the weather is clear. Then, hike back down to Shipton Camp and after a nice brunch, descend down to Old Moses Camp. Overnight in Old Moses Camp.

*Note: Optional hike down via Chogoria route available at an extra cost

Inclusions: Trek to Old Moses (20Kms / 10hrs), 1N Camping, Meals: 1B/1L/1D.

Day 4: Trek Old Moses to Sirimon Park Gate (2,600m) & Return to Nairobi (B,L)

After breakfast, descend gradually through the rainforest to Sirimon Park Gate. Drive back to Nanyuki and onwards to Nairobi, full of everlasting memories.

Good to Know

Physical rating: You must have a high level of fitness to take part in this trek. You will be walking at high altitudes every day and it will be physically demanding.  In the months leading up to your trek, try walking with your daypack, climbing long staircases and add a couple of bricks to it for real training. Undertake regular aerobic exercise such as walking, jogging, swimming or cycling. The more preparation you have done in advance, the more you will enjoy it.

Suggested Packing List: Backpack (10 - 15 liters), sleeping bag (if desired-- sheets & blankets are provided), hiking poles, rain pants, plastic rain poncho, trekking boots, sandals/flip flops, thermals (socks, t-shirts, sweater), windbreaker, hiking trousers, shorts, wool hat/beanie, gloves, sun hat, sun block, sunglasses, flashlight/torch, camera (with extra batteries & memory card), personal medications, reusable water bottle, water purification tablets, toiletries (toothpaste, soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toilet paper, towel).

Food Budget: Please expect to spend at least 20 USD per day on food and beverages. Please note that food costs will vary depending on the number of portions consumed, location and availability.

Gratuity: Tipping is by no means mandatory, but is customary. For a job well done, we recommend tipping 10% to your guide, porter, and driver.
