Trip Overview

The Lamkhaga pass is a remote trek that is a classic route if one wishes to travel from Gangotri to Kinnaur. This trek takes you through some of the most rural regions of Uttarakhand as well as Himachal Pradesh in India. These regions other than being extremely remote, is full of majestic landscapes and sceneries.

Itinerary

Day 01: Chitkul to Dumti

Today we will pick us up from Chitkul and drop us a little ahead of Rani Kanda. We will then trek for 8 to 9 km through lush meadows, brooks, streams and waterfalls towards Dumti.

Duration:  7 hours trekking

Distance: 9 km

Day 02: Dumti to Gundar

Today we start our trek along the true right banks of the Baspa River. So as to avoid turbulence on the stream we must start early. We reach Gundar, a green and beautiful meadow ground, after the trek, and set our camps here, for the night.

Duration: 5-6 hours trek

Distance: 15 km

Day 03: Gundar to Lamkhaga Pass Base Camp in Kinnaur

Today we start our trek early in the morning. The trail however will be a little less lush and vegetated. The glaciers and rocks should start after a matter of 2 km and reach the Lamkhaga Pass Base Camp in Kinnaur. We set our camps for the night.

Duration: 6-7 hours trekking

Day 04: Lamkhaga Pass basecamp (Kinnaur) to Lamkhaga Pass base camp (Gangotri Side) via Lamkhaga Pass

Today’s trek can be strenuous in ways depending on the snow situation and the condition of the ice on the trail. Our trail will be marked by religiously significant stone chortens that is made as a memorial mound for Buddhist people. We also cross snow slopes between 2 ribs and some crevasses. The climb can be on the steeper side but we will be using all safety measures to ensure responsible trekking. We will find that the views are breath taking. The rivers flow on either sides of the pass and into the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Day 05: Lamkhaga Pass Base Camp to Kyarkoti

Today, we cross the river while staying on the true left side of the valley. We will notice a change of landscapes as well as vegetation, and finally set our camps at Kiarkoti, which will make for an amazing campsite with a lush meadow.

Duration: 6-8 hours trekking

Distance: 16 km

Day 06: Kyarkoti to Harsil; drive to Gangnani

Today we continue to walk the trail alongside the river Jalandhari and cross dense forests, streams, waterfalls and brooks. After our trek today, we set our camps at Harsil, or we can choose to drive a mere 30 minutes to Gangnani and stay in a guest house. A good thing to know about Gangnani is that it has areas that are known for their natural hot water spring baths.

Duration: 6-7 hours trekking

Distance: 14 km

Day 07: Harsil/Gangnani to Dehradun drive

Today after a hearty breakfast, we conclude the trip with a drive back to Dehradun.

  • Rent for camping equipment.
  • Forest entry charges.

  • Tented accommodation throughout the trek. Possible guest house accommodation on Day 6.

Excluded

  • Transport to reach Dehradun from hometown.
  • Transport to reach Chitkul from Shimla can be arranged on request.
  • Personal expenses like tips, personal medicines, phone calls etc.
  • Any transport support during the trek apart from what is included above.
  • Rent for trekking shoes is Rs 200 per trekking day. The charges are applicable irrespective of whether the shoes are worn or not during the trek. Availability of shoes needs to be confirmed with us.
  • Rent for walking stick is Rs 50 per trekking day. The charges are applicable irrespective of whether the stick is used or not.
  • Accommodation in Dehradun.
  • Accommodation in Sangla/Chitkul can be arranged on request.
  • Personal luggage with mass not exceeding 12 kg per bag per person can be carried by porters/mules @ Rs 300 per day per bag.

Food

All the meals are included in the fare. Meals are freshly prepared and completely hygienic. You’ll get tea or coffee of your choice along with snacks. You may carry some packaged snacks.

Accommodation

You’ll get a chance to stay in campsites during this trek. Accommodation is spacious and comfortable with all the basic amenities.
