Goecha La Trek is considered to be one of the most scenic and romantic trails of the Indian Himalayas. The trail offers enchanting and pleasant walk passing through rhododendron forest, meadows of Thansing and Dzongri, a brimming river of Prekchu, serene Lake of Samiti, icy trails of Goecha La, and the looming presence of the peaks of Pandim and Kanchenjunga. All come together to make the Goecha La trek a truly spectacular experience.
The expedition is a merger of both adventure and beauty dotted with dense forests, rocky trains, and bugyals. The highlight of the trek is the rhododendron forest that is adorned with shades of pink and red during the month of May.
Highlights:
Day 1: NJP/Bagdogra to Yuksom
Once you arrive at Bagdogra/NJP (New Jalpaiguri), a representative will receive you and transfer you to your hotel in Yuksam.
Day 2: Yuksom to Sachen
On this day after a restful sleep, you’ll start the trek expedition to Sachen (7150ft) passing through picturesque landscapes.
Day 3: Sachen to Tshokha
Start the day early morning and begin the journey from Sachen to Tshokha via Bhakim. Dotted with most spectacular mountain views and covered with greenery, the trail is simply spectacular.
Day 4: Tshokha to Dzongri
The trail route for the day begins from Tshoka reaching Dzongro via Phedang. The place makes you feel close to nature standing above the clouds.
Day 5: Rest Day in Dzongri
The day is to acclimatize and relax at Dzongri encircled with magnificent mountainous views, rhododendron forest, and snow-covered crests. The place is extremely beautiful and considered the meeting place of man and mountain gods.
Day 6: Dzongri to Thangsing Trek
After breakfast start the trek and descend approx 350m steep down to Kokchurung at the bank of river Preckcku. The trail down the hill passes through the rhododendron bushes. As you cross the river, you start the climb to Thansing, where the trail takes you through silver fir and rhododendron forest.
Day 7: Thangsing to Samiti Lake- Lamuyune Trek
The trek starts with a slight climb and passes along the banks of river Prekchu and the moraines. On the way, you may witness the herds of Yaks grazing on the meadows.
Day 8: Samiti Lake- Lamuyune to Goechala pass- back to Thangsing
Wake up early in the morning before dawn at around 3.30am and walk up to Goechala to have a mesmeric sunrise view while enjoying packed breakfast. The trail passes through Mt. Pandim moraines. Then you climb down and walk through a plain sandy area of Zemathang. Now you start climbing up to Goechala pass slowly, and after reaching, you get the close view of Mt. Khangchendzonga. Take rest for a while, and then continue the trek back to Samiti. Rest once you reach the destination, and then trek to Laminin for Lunch. Trek back to Thangsing for overnight camping.
Day 9: Thansing to Tshoka Trek
Wake up early and take a short walk to the ridge behind the camp to get a fantastic view of Kangchenjunga. After breakfast, leave Thangsing taking a different route to reach Tshoka. You start to descend to the Prekchu River and contour around through forests to reach Phedang. From there begin the steep walk down to Tshoka.
Day 10: Tshoka to Yuksam Trek
Retrace your steps from Tshoka to Yuksam as you descend marking the final day of the trek. The trek is going to be easy due to the path which is mainly downhill. As you reach Yuksom, take rest, and then drive back to Darjeeling.
Day 11: Back to Airport/Railways Station
After a restful sleep and breakfast, begin the road travel to reach Bagdogra/NJP for your journey back home.
