Each day on the Great India Desert Trek brings a slew of discoveries-- stark sand dunes against azure skies, rosy sunsets, the star studded dome of the night bowing over the earth, and unforgiving extremes of nature amidst which, quite astonishing, human life flourishes.
You will get to ride on camels across the vast sandy stretches, watch village people perform elaborate song and dance for the visitors, and maybe also catch exciting sightings of the ecologically vulnerable chinkara deer or white-footed foxes of the Thar!
Day 1- Reach Bikaner by Train
After arriving at Bikaner by rail today, you will be welcomed to an overnight homestay for a comfortable and restful night before we begin on the journey tomorrow. If you arrive in the morning, check out Bikaner’s vibrant bazaars for specialties of city-- saree, nokha rezai, mojari sandals, and jewelry of the kundan design.
Day 2- Camp near Napasar at Vijay Dhora Trek
We shall pitch camps for tonight near Napasar at Vijay Dhora after a few hours of trekking through the dunes. The local performative culture of the Bikaneri people contains many interesting aesthetic elements which would be showcased in their performance at the campfire gathering tonight. This night shall be made memorable with the lonely sound of guitar strumming to rustling of the burning fire and the great Thar Desert at the backdrop.
Day 3- Camp at Surdhna Trek
We get deeper into the remote heart of the deserts today. Surdhna is a cloistered hamlet hidden amidst the dunes in the middle of nowhere, with no electricity, and no traffic noise. You can expect the night temperature to drop drastically here. Come prepared to fight the chills with adequate woolens!
Nights when the skies are clear, you can see the star-studded sky bowing down to meet the earth-- a 360 degree stunning panorama! Be at the spot to take in the sunrise and sunset vistas, with a cuppa warming chai clasped in your hands and who knows, you might just get a glimpse of a fox trotting around the campsite!
Day 4- Lunch at Balakiya Dhora, Trek to Koththi, Drive Back
Have been wondering on which day would the ‘ship of the desert’ finally feature on this trek? Well, it’s today! Before reaching Balakiya Dhora at lunch time, you will give you a tour of the dunes seated lavishly upon a camel! The lonesomeness of the deserts can really start getting under your skin this time. There might also be a cart drawn by camels. The night unfolds as you voyage riding camels into the fortressed city of Bikaner where we shall stay the night and rest.
Day 5- Departure
