Trip Overview

Makalu is the fifth highest peak in the world and has one of the hardest approaches to any base camp with intermediating passes blocking access. The trek will begin from Tumlingtar and head towards north to Num. From Num it starts getting tough. This trip is filled with adventure and will be a completely new experience for you. You can witness scenic views of many of the highest peaks.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrive at Kathmandu

Staff from Sherpa Expedition will welcome you at the airport and drop you to the hotel. You may rest for sometime after that you’ll visit the office and there will be a welcome dinner with Nepalese cuisine and Nepalese dance. 

Day 02: Flight to Tumlingtar and drive to Chichira

You’ll get a flight for Tumlingtar and after that drive up to Chichira which is a small Gurung settlement. You’ll stay here overnight. You have plenty of time for the preparation of next day trek. 

Day 03: Chichira to Num

You’ll start this day with an early morning breakfast. You’ll start with a moderately paced walk through lush mountain forests and picturesque villages which take you to Num. You’ll stay here overnight. 

Day 04: Num to Seduwa

You’ll start descending through terraced farms, forests, and reach Barun River. After a brief walk, you’ll reach to Barun National Park – where you’ll register your permit, and following the trail, you’ll reach Seduwa for an overnight stay. 

Day 05: Seduwa to Tashigaon

Start ascending to Kasuwa Khola and cross hillside villages and pass through paddy fields to reach a charming village surrounded by the Himalayas - Tashigaon. Stay here overnight. 

Day 06: Tashigaon to Khongma Danda

This day is going to be a little tough, as you’ll start walking on a steep trail in high elevation. You’ll ascend through streams and forests onto the ridge on a steep trail to pass through Kharka. You’ll take rough stairs for a bit towards down to reach Kingma Danda. Stay here overnight. 

Day 07: Acclimatization in Khongma Danda

 Acclimatization in Khongma Danda will help you in crossing Shipton La. Allow your body to rest for the day, you may explore nearby areas. Stay overnight. 

Day 08: Khongma Danda to Dobate

You’ll start climbing towards Shipton La. After crossing the lake Kalo Pokhari, you’ll pass through Keke La to witness astonishing views of Peak 6, and 7. After crossing Keke La Pass, you’ll reach your destination at Dobate for staying overnight. 

Day 09: Dobate to Yangri Kharka

You’ll pass through the rhododendron forests leading up to the Barun River and reach a valley. You must be very careful in the first two hours as it is a difficult and steep trail. Gradually walk for gaining altitude to reach Ynagri Kharka for staying overnight. 

Day 10: from Yangri Kharka to Lngmale Kharka 

The moderate walk will lead you to the boulder fields, yak pastures, and lush forests. You’ll pass through Marek and notice the massive Himalayas. Stay overnight at Langmale Kharka. 

Day 11: from Langmale Kharka to Makalu Base Camp

You’ll start walking towards Shershong and finally reach Makalu Base Camp. This trek will be difficult for you as it is through icy glaciers and snow-clad mountains. You’ll stay here overnight. 

Day 12: A Day in Makalu Base Camp

It is a rocky barren place beyond the large Barun glacier. You may explore glaciers, lakes, and enjoy the views of Everest, Lhotse and the south face of Makalu.  

Day 13: from Makalu Base Camp to Yangri Kharka 

Start descending from the base camp to pass through Merek, Lnagmale Kharka, Merek, to reach Yangri Kharka. You’ll stay here overnight. 

Day 14: from Yangri Kharka to Dobate

You’ll start descending through green forests and walk towards Dobate by following the banks of Barun. Stay at Dobate overnight. 

Day 15: from Dobate to Khongma

You’ll begin trekking from Dobate to Mumbuk and pass through Keke La, Kauma La, and Tutu La to descend to Khongma Danda. Overnight stay will be arranged here. 

Day 16: from Khongma Danda to Tashigaon

You’ll pass through thick forest to reach the Sherpa villages of Tashigaon. Overnight stay will be arranged here.  

Day 17: from Tashingaon to Seduwa

You’ll retrace your steps through exit of Makalu National Park and start descending towards Barun River to cross hillsides and move further to stay overnight at Seduwa again.

Day 18: from Seduwa to Num

You’ll start walking through lush forests towards Num. After crossing the dense forest you’ll reach Num, a Sherpa village, for staying overnight. 

Day 19: from Num to Tumlingtar

You’ll retrace your footsteps to Chichira to see the last glimpse of Makalu and after that to reach Tumlingtar. You’ll stay here overnight and prepare for departing early morning for Kathmandu. 

Day 20: from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu

You’ll take a flight back to Kathmandu after the long trek. You’ll get a day in the hotel to relax. You’ll get farewell dinner for celebrating this marvelous journey. Spend the night in Kathmandu. 

Day 21: Departure

Your journey will end today. The staff will drop you at the airport 3 hours before the scheduled flight to avoid any inconvenience.

Food: You’ll get breakfast in the hotel in Kathmandu. During the trek, you’ll get freshly cooked meals prepared by the Sherpa expedition’s kitchen staff. You’ll also get packaged snacks during the trek along with the choice of tea or coffee. You may carry some nuts or packaged food for the trek. 

Accommodation: You’ll get 24 days/23 night accommodation. Three days in the hotel and rest in the camp during the trek. Accommodation is available on a twin sharing basis. You’ll get windproof sharing tents, dining tents, chairs, and toilet tents. Do not expect high-class service during the trek up in the mountains. The hotel will be three stars and filled with all the modern amenities.
